During my time at the Israel Tech Challenge Full Stack Bootcamp, I participated in a Hackathon focused on creating apps to counteract the issues that arose from Covid 19. My team was awarded first place for our esoteric "running" application that utilized Natural Language Processing (NLP) in order to help women affected by domestic abuse.
Problem:
The ongoing pandemic has caused a rise in domestic violence. ERAN, an Israeli nonprofit providing emotional first aid by phone, reported a 35.8% increase in domestic violence-related calls. Between March and May 2020, 5 women were killed throughout a 7-week period corresponding with the government imposed lockdowns. In March, a number of women's shelters reached full capacity due to new arrivals and women who stayed longer in the shelters because of the pandemic.
Solution:
Shelp is a domestic violence prevention application. When in fear, a potential victim can start recording interactions with her partner. The recording is analyzed, calling the police if her specific safe-word is used. The goal is to offer access to a support community and "trainers" in her area following the event.
